A collection of securities chosen to attempt to represent a specific investment area. Common ones include the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the
S&P 500 and the FTSE 100. Many funds choose to benchmark themselves against an index as a performance measure. Note that it is not necessarily the same index that Morningstar may have chosen to benchmark the fund.
